Your complete pre-grading revision guide, checklist, and resources for 1st Kup. Tick off every practical item before grading day — no excuses!
Congratulations, Black Stripes! ๐ฅ You are standing at the threshold of the most significant achievement in Taekwondo โ Black Belt (1st Dan). This is the culmination of years of dedication, discipline, and hard work. The 1st Kup grading is the final coloured belt examination before Black Belt, and it demands the very best of everything you have learned.
At this level, examiners expect mastery of Choong-Moo (the final coloured belt pattern โ 30 movements), all previous patterns performed to a high standard, advanced sparring skills across all formats, power destruction, and a comprehensive knowledge of Korean terminology. Your technique must be sharp, your stances solid, your attitude exemplary.
๐จ This is Your Final Step โ Make It Count
Black Belt is not just a belt โ it is a statement of character, commitment, and capability. Examiners will be assessing not just your physical skills, but your spirit, focus, and attitude throughout the entire grading. Every movement, every bow, every response matters.
๐ช Training Commitment is Critical
At Black Stripe level, training once or twice a week is not enough. Aim for multiple sessions each week, supplemented by solo practice at home. Focus on pattern precision, sparring combinations, and conditioning. Use the training videos below to study technique and timing.
๐ฅ Sparring at Its Most Demanding
1st Kup sparring requires advanced timing, control, combination work, and the ability to perform under pressure. You must demonstrate 3-step, 2-step, and 1-step sparring, semi-free sparring, and free sparring โ all to a high standard. Regular sparring practice is essential.
Use the grading video provided to support your training. Practice alongside your classes to refine techniques, build confidence, and fully understand what will be expected on grading day. The Black Belt is within reach โ train hard, stay focused, and give everything you have. ๐ฅโฌ
At 1st Kup, Black Stripes develop their own 1-step sparring techniques using the following five categories (not in a set order). Both attacker and defender start in parallel ready stance. The attacker steps forward with the right leg and punches with the right hand; on the second occasion, with the left leg and left hand.
Tick each item once you are confident you can perform it correctly. The progress bar tracks your practical skills โ complete all of those to unlock the notification button. Theory and Korean sections are bonus items to help you prepare further. No excuses! ๐ช
